In the summer of 2021, TPNA and Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association collaborated with NCCU history professor Dr. Charles Johnson and with local history buff Algin Holloway to research African American heritage in the watershed. The result of the collaboration is a new cultural heritage sign, the first in a series of displays that together will be the Ellerbe Creek Watershed Hall of Distinction, celebrating the cultural heritage of the Ellerbe Creek watershed. This first sign features the stories of three distinguished African Americans who grew up in the watershed: 1) Dr. Elmira Mangum, President of Florida A&M University, 2) Steve Wilson, professional football player and coach, and 3) Maj. Ellison Capers Wynn, a decorated Korean War veteran.
The sign will soon be produced and installed along the Ellerbe Creek Trail, between Knox St. and Club Blvd., thanks to funding from the Duke Doing Good in the Neighborhood grant program.
