Spurred by federal government and Duke Energy incentives, Watts Street Baptist Church recently installed a solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Because of practical restrictions and aesthetic concerns associated with installing solar panels on the church’s terra cotta tile roof, a solar carport was built in the church’s parking lot instead. The 75-panel carport is now in operation and is projected to provide 48.6 Kwh of electricity, meeting 60-70% of the church’s annual electricity needs. The system is designed to allow for car charging stations to be added in the future should the church decide to do so. This system will save the church thousands of dollars each year, significantly decrease the church’s carbon impact and serve as an example of environmental sustainability in the community.
